Detroit International Academy Visits Lab

On Friday, May 18, NSCL welcomed students from DIA (Detroit International Academy), a women’s high school that is located in the heart of downtown Detroit. DIA is the first high school that the recently formed WaMPS Outreach team ever visited. After the initial visit to the school, many of the DIA students said that they would love to have the opportunity to explore the NSCL first hand.

Encouraged by the students’ enthusiasm, members of WaMPS Outreach began working with the school to coordinate a special end of school year visit to the Laboratory. In addition to a tour of the facility, the visit gave the students the opportunity to interact with many members of the Laboratory including graduate students, professors, and Director Gelbke. The partnership between NSCL and Detroit Public Schools has given many students a concrete example of the exciting career opportunities in science.

WaMPS Outreach is grateful to JINA and NSCL for the support that makes these types of activities possible.
